Balanced Scorecard as support to management decisions: A case study in a small property milk production Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Cardoso, Antônio Augusto Brion; Lopes, Marcos Aurélio; Carvalho, Francisval de Melo; Ferrazza, Rodrigo Andrade; Lima, André Luís Ribeiro; Cardoso, Milton Ghedini.
Aimed to apply the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) in a dairy farm with small-scale production, located in the south of Minas Gerais. The survey was conducted from January to December 2013 and the gathering of information was carried out through semi-structured interviews on the spot. As data collection instruments were used personal interviews, document analysis and direct and participant observation. The farm has 216 ha, 80% of the leased area. The activities are dairy farming, corresponding to 80% of revenues, and the cultivation of coffee. The breeding farm is 22 predominantly Holstein cows (¾ H) that are loose in the pasture. Daily production is 350 liters average of 15.9 liters of milk per cow in milk, in two daily milkings. The strong point is the low cost...

Evaluation of a portable watermelon juice extracting machine CIGR Journal
ADEKANYE, TIMOTHY ADESOYE; Adelakun, Joseph Oluwasegun.
A small-scale machine for extracting watermelon juice was developed with locally available materials and evaluated to determine its best extracting operating factors. The machine slices a whole watermelon and extracts its juice content. This machine operates on the principle of compressive and shearing force exerted through an auger.  Component parts includes feeding hopper, conveyor shaft, auger conveyor housed in a cylindrical chamber, juice sieve, juice collector, seed - pulp outlet, gear and main frame. It was powered by a 1hp electric motor, coupled to a gear reduction speed to operate at 46.67 rm-1. In operation, watermelon fruits introduced via the hopper is squeezed and transferred to the auger conveyor. The auger presses and squeezes the...

Gender analysis of technology utilisation among small scale oil palm fruits processors in Ondo State, Nigeria Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Gbenga F.,Koledoye; Olanike F,Deji.
The study identified the types of improved technologies utilised, tracked gender involvement at the various stages of oil palm fruits processing activities with a view to highlighting differences in the utilisation of these technologies among male and female processors. Multistage sampling technique was used to select 240 (120 males and 120 females) oil palm fruits processors using structured interview schedule. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Gender Mapping (GM) were used to elicit qualitative data. Data collected were summarised with the aid of descriptive statistics while t-test was used to test the hypothesis. Results showed that sterilizer, digester and hydraulic hand press were utilised by both male and female processors. Results of t-test revealed...

Investment and factor remuneration in small-scale fisheries ArchiMer
Lantz, Frederic; Junqueira-lopez, R.
Investment behaviour is a complex process which plays a major role in fisheries dynamics because it determines the size of the fishing fleet. The purpose of this paper is to examine the consequences of the main characteristics of fishing activity on investment. The theoretical dynamic model of a fishery shows us the "bangbang" pallern of investment. Furthermore, fishing activity has a high intrinsic variability. Thus, the system in which income is shared between the crew and the ship owner is also considered as a way of sharing risks and so reducing the variability ofinvestment return. Finally, the type of investment financing (subsidies, loans) can strongly stimulate fisheries dynamics but can also have some undesirable effects. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
